Government procurement and defence

Overview

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced in March Canada's Plan to Mobilise Industry to fight COVID-19, which will create pathways to deploy resources to domestic manufacturers and businesses so they can help during this critical time.

The government's plan to mobilise industry includes:

  • Scaling production lines and retooling manufacturing lines so that they are capable of manufacturing critical supplies in Canada

  • Requiring the innovation programs to prioritise fighting against COVID-19

  • Directly funding key Canadian companies working on projects aimed at producing medical equipment

  • Sourcing equipment domestically to ensure secure supply chains

Opportunities exist for New Zealand manufacturers who wish to supply PPE and supplies to Canada. Buyandsell.gc.ca is the Government of Canada's open procurement information service to find tender opportunities, pre-qualified suppliers, and contract awards. New Zealand exporters can use this site to access Government of Canada tenders for free and without registering.

Faced with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spread, the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are taking unprecedented measures to protect the health and well-being of Canadians and prevent the spread of this disease. With essential military operations continuing, many defence procurements are still required particularly for essential goods and services, like medical suppliers, temporary housing structures, etc.
